Read our online guide ‘Pathway to Moving’ for helpful advice on how to get started.
A couple of months before you move, book a removal company. Check that they have transit insurance, and keep copies of all receipts and quotes.
Check with IRD or your accountant regarding any tax deductible moving expenses you may be able to claim.
Make a list of all regular communication you receive by post, so you can notify all senders (e.g. power and telecommunication companies) of your new address. You can also use the NZ Post ‘Change My Address’ service.
Cancel any service contracts at your present address (e.g. green waste collection or garden maintenance).
If you are moving to a new town or city, do some homework on that community or neighborhood. Familiarise yourself with public transport and nearby community facilities.
Gather medical and dental records ready to transfer to new providers. Arrange for your children's school or day care records to be transferred.
